Best roots reggae bassist?

Whose your favorite reggae bassist and or who has inspired you the most?

I'd say a tie between Leroy Sibbles and Robbie Shakesphere.

Leroy, for allegedly playing on pretty much all of Coxsone's famous Studio One catalog. He's like the Jamerson of reggae. All those great riddims like kutchie, rockfort rock, real rock... the foundation of reggae.

And Robbie's just a really tasty player with plenty of recording credits in his own right. He and Sly are one of the baddest riddim sections ever.

I don't know who played on it, but whoever did Desmond Dekker's early stuff like "King Of Ska," "You Can Get It If You Really Want It," and "It Mek" gets my vote. Desmond Dekker was where it all began.

Robbie for next.
Flabba Holt of the Roots Radics is another great.
And though not strictly roots, Ritchie Daley of Third World is a great one, and was a huge influence on me back in the day.

I was just listening to Desmond Dekker about 10 min ago! I will have to pull out the CD to see who is on Bass.

Desmond Dekker got the short end of the stick. He invented ska and greatly influenced the direction of reggae as well, but hardly anyone ever mentions him. But he was the coolest.

I was gonna say Flabba too. I really like his style. Family Man is the obvious (most popular) choice but I guess it's just an example of over-exposure for me. one of the greats tho for sure.

I was listening to some Barbara Paige the other day - "Babylon Must Fall" (great, GREAT track). Thinking the bassline was really cool, really classic sweet reggae - who's the bassist?

She had recorded that track with the Wailers.
It's Family Man on bass.
Even not knowing who it was (perhaps especially so), it just shone as a beautiful reggae bassline.
