The simplest explanation I got from the horse is the Sansamp (RBI) has a baked in scoop, the VT doesn't. You can make the VT sound like a BDDI, but not the other way around. Of course the VT doesn't have a mid sweep.
The rackmount versions naturally can drive an amp, I've seen the DI versions do the same.
