Best slap sound

I've done slap stuff on the following basses, in gigging situations:

Fender American P deluxe
Warwick active corvette
SX Jazz
Dano Hodad
Cort Curbow
Alvarez Dana
MM Sterling
MM Bongo
MM Stingray

The winner hands down, no question about it is...

The Musicman Stingray

Bongo runs a close 2nd. It's got thump that really cuts, but the Stingray's a little extra high end and funkeeeeness to it.

Nice playing SurrenderMonkey!

That last clip (the Fender J) is a Marcus song right? Which one is it?

I wish it was me :) It's from a site that hoards bass guitar samples. The same guys plays all those, he is a bass teacher. But the Stingray is really nice. I'd have to go with that one.

The weird thing is, the Fender J is apparently a Legend (you know, one of the crappy Fender knock offs), with DI Marzio. Sounds pretty good for a $200 bass.

:hmm: Wal? You think?

Ok, admittedly I'm pretty new to mine (and ceratinly not the world's best slap player either ;) ), but I haven't found the slap tones to be anywhere near as good as the "finger style" tones so far, or even particularly juicy in their own right.

What strings and which contol settings do you use, Chris?

Oh, not that I own a Wal myself (I wish!) but I love hearing Jonas Hellborg slapping on his. Not the most hi-fi slap tone, just a big, beefy, gritty, burpy and woody type of tone. Also, in the last few seconds of the fade-out of Rush's "Grand Designs", listen to the two big pops that Geddy does...I love it!

Sorry Chris, my mistake :hmm: ! I thought that we'd chatted on the Wal forum recently, so either that was a different Chris, or it was the Status forum and I'm doubley wrong :p . No biggie!

Anyway, thanks for the tips about sound clips. I'm off to YouTube to do a "Jonas Hellborg" search (should have done that by now really, shouldn't I ;) )?
