I have a '95 Yamaha TRB-6. It has Yamaha stacked single coils and a preamp. There is a 3-position mid-shift knob that has off, mid cut, and mid boost or cut (adjustable Q & level). This bass sounds great no matter what I've plugged it into... whether I'm trying (very hard) to get a Jaco J-Bass growl, a Stanley "Alembic" tone, a McCartney Hofner tone, funk or anything in between, this bass delivers. I haven't gotten any Rickenbacker tones out of it, but I haven't really tried either. Recording direct or through a SansAmp sounds perfect (to me), every time. Interestingly, it sounds good through almost any amp I've ever used too. I'm so biased, that if it doesn't sound good with a particular amp, I blame the amp.
Sadly, the only version of this bass available today is the Yamaha John Patitucci Signature that sells for about $2,800 US.
No matter what, I have to agree with what others have said... Any bass played by a master always sounds good to me.
Still, I think we all know a few incontrovertible truths: 1) There are probably more opinions on this thread than there are people on Talk Bass (accounting for schizophrenia and indecisiveness), 2) the tone is truly in your hands and your head, 3) there is no right answer.
