BEST Studio Bass Tone

Most of your tone is in your fingertips. You can obviously do different things to manipulate the sound w/different pressures but the bulk is actually how you sound. You can further change it by the bass/pickup configuration and amp setup but in the end, it starts and ends with you. Ever notice how you can play a P-bass with flats, use just your plucking index finger and yet still not sound like Jamerson? You'd need to rip off his fingertips and approach the bass exactly the same way he did. Some people naturally get very close, others no where near. Good luck to you getting the tone you are happy with.

Old guy checkin' in here....

For some unknown reason, I'm drawn to the bass work on Little Feat's "Let It Roll" CD from ~1988. Everpresent but transparent enough not to step on everything else.

I know its not true rock 'n roll but the engineering is phenomenal IMO.
