Double Bass Best Upright Bass for Psychobilly

Any ideas for psychobilly bass? I am not going for awesome tone or anything that resonates properly. I prefer acoustically dead so I can just plug in go (Psychos are probably hated for this reason). Would any bass do? FMI, Gedo, Thompson, or maybe someone has an opinion on Blast Cult or Knight String Bass. I just don't see myself buying an Engelheardt EM-1 just to repaint. I also don't wanna pay $3500(Knight String Bass) for an awesome paint job that I can get done locally on a CCB.

Actually not any bass will do, you want solid construction because I assume you will be abusing the crap out of it. If you go for too cheap, you will have it in splinters soon enough.

The fact that there are mfrs specializing in rockabilly basses these days should tell you something. It's not the paint you are paying for. What's your budget?

If you want it really dead, I saw a guy who had a repairman remove the top of his bass, fill the entire body with foam and then put the top back on!

This is good to know. Thank you brianrost. My budget is up to $3500. Just didn't want something beautiful like a Kay or Engelhardt when all I'm gonna do is punk it out. I didn't want to go to Blast Cult or Knight String Bass because if it's not necessary to spend that much, I won't.

I tend to think that the definitive, nuclear hardened Psychobilly bass is a vintage AlCoA aluminum bass. For well within your budget, you should be able to find a nice one, but it will likely take six months to a year for the right one to come available if you want a restored & highly functional one; less if you want a project to restore yourself:

As for a psychobilly bass A Batchelder & Sons has been recommended in the past.

On a more serious note, used Slap Kings come up for sale every so often. I've got a CCB that is my main gigging bass now, not all CCBs are bad CCBs, some are mediocre!

A semi-solid Shen would be within your budget with change left over for a DIY paint job or even the hiring of a local spritzer. It's not a "dead" bass by any means, but you could get a luthier to put in an extra soundpost bass-bar side, some other structural reinforcements for stunts.

Then there's the gas-tank basses, Link Removed, suitcase basses. DIY or Google out some builders (<<< linked already for you).
