How many strings are you looking at?

If you want a good bass, and a 6-er at that, you really can't beat a Brice HXB-406.

I got the one in snazzy Black and it's done wonders for quite a few years.

People are always surprised when I tell them what I paid for it and how quickly it got to me........

I love it.

The Squier Vintage Modified series is awesome as well. Love both. (Still prefer the Brice, though...... ;P )

Depends on what you like... GAK.co.uk are doing the Epiphone Thunderbird for £169. Try getting a case for the bloody thing, though!

I've just bought a mint (not a scratch) 2006 MIM Fender Precision for £190. Is that cheap enough for you? :)

Have a look at the for sale forums on basschat.co.uk Loads of bargains to be had in the UK!

Would everyone please stop recommending used mia Peaveys? I am trying to buy all of them, wait until people realize how good they really are, sell them for what they are really worth, then buy North Dakota. Feel free to visit me...I'll buzz you in at the gate...:hyper:

You can spend that much money a new bass that would be a "budget " bass, you would end selling down the road when you upgrade, getting nothing for it, or you can buy a used Carvin, Peavey, Yamaha, Ibenez and end up with a bass you can keep & play a long time and get your your money back if you sell it.

Epiphone Thunderbird, thats an easy decision, 300 US dollars

I agree UNLESS, you really want wide spacing AND you can find a Z6 at a slight discount like this: Link Removed (they are usually a little over $400).

I had an HXB-406, and found a blue Z6 reduced from Rondo. I am keeping my Douglas WOB-826 for my close-spaced 6er needs (I'm not really used to a wide-spaced 6er) but I got rid of the HXB 'cause the Z6 was so much nicer (and I really couldn't justify 3 6ers).

So oh yeah, the WOB-826 is another nice budget 6er Link Removed and I liked the tone on mine better than my HXB (but the HXB was a better appointed bass).

Its true. I liked to HXB for its close spacing, but it made slapping difficult on fast passages sometimes. I turned it into a fretless recently though and now its great since I tend to play MUCH more fingerstyle on a fretless anyways.

Pretty much anything from Rondo music with SX or Brice is going to be pretty decent, especially for the price.

Now, after playing a bass with 16mm string spacing, I can't really see myself going much above 18mm for spacing. 16mm was just so much easier to play :).
