New: Squier Vintage Modified series by Fender. The Jazz in natural finish is especially nice, but every bass in that series has good words out about it, and they all fit your budget.
If you buy used, your options expand considerably!

Buy used if you can - you'll generally get a lot better bass for that kind of money. I'd suggest a used Ibanez ATK, I have 2 that I bought used, for about 150 pounds each, and they're great basses.
But that's just my bias. Used MIM Fenders will be in your price range too, and if you find a good one, they're nice instruments.

i own a jay turser 402 and it plays beautifully for a $200 bass. Everybody tells me it handles so well and plays real easy. Ive never had a problem with it
Squier Vintage Modified Jazz or any of the other in the series that Eagle Moon showed. Can't get much better for the money. Now if you look at used I can only recommend a brand I know and that is Peavey. There are some good basses by Peavey that sell cheap used.
Just make sure you have extra jet pack fuel if you pick up a T40 >_< or it will be to infinity and the floor...
