It's not the same as dampening the strings from above, and the foam can't be positioned close to the saddles, which can cause intonation issues with certain string gauges.

If you took out the bridge saddle height screws and replaced them with with longer round head screws, you could fit individual rubbers over each string at the at the saddle.
