Hi All, apologies if this has been covered off previously but im new here and a bit of a technophobe so dont know how to search old posts...

Anyway, im looking for a drum machine for 2 purposes a) to aid my practicing and make it a little more fun and b) to use for very basically mapping out new songs im writing and laying down a drum track on my digi 4 track.

Im not trying to create anything too sonically perfect as generally the demos will just be used to work out vocaol harmony ideas etc, but passable rock/pop drum sounds that dont grate too much would be a bonus.

Also, im not the most technically minded so ease of use is a big consideration for me.

Lastly, im extremely poor! :bawl: so want to spend as little as possible on this...

So, am i looking for something that doesn't exist or can anyone make any suggestions of something that might fit the bill!

I'd suggest looking at the Boss stuff then seeing if you can find one used on e-Bay or something.

I don't know Hydrogen, but my first thought was that I'd do it on a computer as well, so I'd definitely recommend that you check out Hydrogen (which I've never tried either, but intend to) first.

The coolest thing I've picked up in the last year is a Korg PadKontrol, which is just a series of 16 velocity (and aftertouch, I think) sensitive pads that connect to the computer via USB. It also has MIDI, but then you need a power supply, whereas it can take its power just from USB. It makes playing with programmed beats a lot of fun and doesn't take up much desk space. I got it off Craigslist for $100.

The HR-16 is great... if the pads still are in good working condition. They are 15-20 years old now and the pad contacts can be troublesome.

I certainly recommend the Alesis SR-16. I paid about $70 for a mint condition unit off ebay and the sounds and ease of use are a bargin. Also has quite a few preset patterns but I've only used them to copy bits of things I found interesting into my own patterns.

I've messed around both with the SR-16 and 18 and they're both fun. I need to pick one of those up b/c I don't always practice with the comp. on and I would love to have some drum beats while I'm messin' around.
