Best way to a/b gear

So I got a bunch of new preamps, compressors etc and I want to make some recordings to a/b them. I have the use of Logic Pro to record and I also have a simple looper

Is the best thing to do just use the looper make a loop and adjust what it's going into and recording that way or to record something into logic, send it back out thru the various preamps and back into logic

What will get me better results?

Looper+headphones is easy for A/B, but recording separate tracks to switch between in a DAW might be more useful and less cumbersome (and results can be saved/retrieved) if you're comparing A/B/C/D or variations between them.

I'm going to record it into logic so I can listen back for sure. My question is should I record one loop into logic clean. Then send it out thru preamp 1, then preamp 2, etc so I get the most consistent results
