Best way to increase punch

Try the Aphex Punch Factory:

You don't need to mess with thresholds and attack & release and all that. This does it for you.

Combine it with an Aphex Bass Xciter:

I use the Aphex compressor and Xciter. The compressor works when you have it cranked high like 8,9, or 10. The Xciter is a cool pedal as well, I can pretty much get the same effect by turning up the Deep Bass on my Hartke amp (DBASS). I don't really use these as much for home practice though, the bass shakes the walls too much and my neighbor can hear.
 
For every db over threshold, the compressor reduces the output gain according to the ratio. So for example, if the input exceeds the threshold by 2db, and the ratio is set at 4:1, the output db is reduced by 8db. If you increase the ratio to 6:1, the output would be reduced by 12db.

I thought that the ratio works like this.

if the ratio is 3:1, each time the output exceeds the threshold by 3DB it only goes 1DB past the threshold. Otherwise said it would take 3db to increase the output 1DB past the threshold.

4:1 is esentially 4DB past the threshold = 1 DB gain, ect ect
I dont get where you are making these numbers up from where a compressor is actually reducing the output by 12db in a 6:1 ratio.
 
You are correct.

From Harmony Central:

"The compressor setting is usually stated as a ratio, such as 2:1, which means that the input level would have to increase by two decibels to create a one decibel increase in the output. With a 4:1 setting, the input would need to change by 4 dB for a 1 dB change in the output level, and so on."

I passed compressor school for the day. Hooray.

To increase punch with a compressor, increase the attack. This will allow a bit of the initial note through before the compressor reduces the volume. I find that with bass, 60-100ms attack, 3:1 ratio and a threshold 3-6db below your average play volume makes for a punchy attack on the notes.



TO THE OP!

I think everybody is missing the big problem here. Its probably the basson 810. If your original speakers were punchier, then go back to that. Any amount of outboard processing will not fix a horrible sounding cab. Not to mention, how are you lugging that around. Doesn't it weigh as much as two ampeg fridges?
 
It's a good cab and I'm getting a good tone from it, but it's way different from anything I've played through and it's also my first 8x10. I think I can get what I desire but may just take more tweaking than I had imagined.

I'm also wondering if the problem lies within my power. The cab is supposed to be pushed with at least 1500 watts and right now I'm only running one channel of my 2400 watt amp, thus 1200 watts (until I get a speakon to dual banana). Now would it help if once I have that amp bridged to crank the gain on the power amp all the way and then control it with the pre amp?

And to answer you, joelb79, I'm in a 5 piece metal band so at times we all have to grab a corner since the cab is 230 pounds.
