Best way to record without an interface?

My band has decided to just record some rough demos in my basement. We will be doing these recordings going straight from an Apex 181 USB mic into a laptop with audacity on it.

We have begun recording the first song and everything went well but I was wondering if anyone had any tips into recording the bass?

What would be the best way to mic the cabinet to achieve the best sound?

Seems the playlist format is unregconized on my Mac. I have Audacity and am about to try the same thing, sort of.

I want to make rough demos from live performances. I am tempted to try using a stereo pair of mics to capture a carefully balanced band sound, drums, bass, pa, and guitars, all "mixed" in the air, live, and on the fly.

Find a good sounding room. Depending on the band a church could be ideal. If you guys actually sound good and blend well at the level of an acoustic drum set you can get excellent results this way. Could be worth renting some decent mics and mic pres. I like a pair of AKG C414's for this sort of thing.

Without an interface you're kind of limited.. If you're going to go to the trouble of recording separate inputs and mixing, you'll save a lot of trouble with even a cheap 2 input USB interface.
