Big Cabs Club II: The Big Cabs Strike Back!

Reviving the thread with a question. Why do big-cab people do big cabs?
  1. Are you playing at venues with no subwoofers and you need to carry the room with authority?
  2. Or huge venues (think arenas) where you can’t otherwise hear yourself on stage?
  3. Just like the look of an impressive stage rig?
  4. It’s great having your electronics up nice and high and easy to adjust (preferable to getting on your knees to adjust the amp on a little 1-12” speaker)?
Any other reasons I didn’t think of?

Regards,
Wayne A. Pflughaupt

1. No I never play without at least 2 subs.
2. Largest venues would be outside gigs. But still not huge.
3. I do like the look of an 8x10 on stage.
4. Didn’t really consider that.

For me, I’m of the opinion that I can always turn down. Of course I don’t need the max volume that my 8x10 and 800 watt head can produce, but I really hate getting into a situation where I need a little more volume and don’t have it available. I know it’s overkill for almost all the gigs I play, but it doesn’t mean I have to drown everyone out either.

1. Sometimes. I did last night.
4. Yes, very much so.

Tilt-back wheels make them so easy to move. At my show last night I rolled my Bergantino NV610 down a sidewalk, down an alley and into a parking garage to my car. It would have sucked to carry a cab (or two) that far.

I am usually lowering my volume at the sound guy's request, but I don't have the opposite problem of my bandmates not hearing or feeling what I'm playing. I don't mind turning down at all, I'm actually glad that he's paying attention and we're working together to dial it in.

Playing the big cab tonight.

Hi Everybody, thought you guys might appreciate something a little different and these might qualify me for official Big Cab Membership?? These are Eminar Valve Heads (200W, 200W, 200W, 160W) and 2 x 15" Eminar Cabs fitted with Celestian greenbacks(?), built in Melbourne Australia in the early 70's when local company Eminar emerged when a Guitarist and Drummer partnered to provide suitable gear for local gigging bands/musos. This was a golden Era when Australia had a pretty good manufacturing industry, Import tax and shipping costs had made Marshalls and Oranges too expensive so the solution was to "Roll Their Own", so to speak. All point to point hand wired with huge transformers and various combinations of different valves. Not sure if they are too well known around the world as they aren't even that well known here, I keep an eye out and whenever I come across one grab it (usually at a good price) because they are loud as hell and sound incredible. I usually only run 2 at a time, either dual mono or stereo depending on pedal arrangement. I have run all 4 at once in mono via a Radial 1-4 Shotgun, I now know what feels like to hear sound through every part of my being, flesh, muscles, skeletal and organs acting as one giant transducer. Unbelievable sound and my drummer lost control of his bowels and turned his "throne" into... well, another type of thron :) priceless. If anybody has ever seen these around in other parts of the world let me know what you think. Cheers guys have a good one.!

Sorry, I completely forgot to mention the first photo of my 2 x Stagemaster (8x8") cabs, and Eminar Head, also Australian made (as far as I'm aware) in the 70's. Each one is loaded with 8 x 8" Plessey Speakers, I don't know too much about them, except they are pretty rare and sought after. If anybody has any info on them I'd like to hear what you know. I picked up the pair on Gumtree Classifieds for $200, didnt even try to haggle the young fella I bought them off. He was dubious about "what I wanted them for", I almost had to convince him to let me buy them, insisted I took an amp there to test them out first because he reckoned he'd tried playing guitar through them and wasn't really that impressed. So I turned up with one of the Eminar Heads, he kinda didn't say much but kinda just kept staring at the amp I lugged into his lounge room. After testing the cabs confirmed a healthy impedance of 8 Ohms each, I plugged in his guitar and strummed an Em chord gently as I brought up the volume. The guys jaw kinda just unhinged at that point. "Sounds pretty good to me" I told him after less than a minute. I shut it down and handed over the cash. "I thought you said you tried your guitar and Amp through them?" I quizzed him. His reply was something like "yer, but it wasn't an amp like that one. Ive heard of those things before, what the hell, (where did you that etc etc?...). After telling him I have 4 Eminar heads, and that I find them around from time to time really cheap because people don't know or appreciate what they have sometimes, I didn't think he was going to let me leave with them :)
I loaded them on the roof racks of my work car, and drove home with a big grin on my face the whole way...
gotta love a good score for cheap from the classifieds.!

So these are the speakers inside the Eminar 2 x 15 Cabinets. Not sure if they are the original ones from the 1970's build, but could well be... Whats the consensus on the Greenback Celestians from the 70's..? Keen to hear what others think of them. I think they are amazing when driven hard but clean, not really suited to effects/dirt, but that could also be the amp I guess. They do have incredible presence though, moves the air pretty effectively in our jam room....

2 or more 15",
I guess I qualify, MarkBass CL152, and I'll happily take a number if they're still being given out. :)

I don't think two 410s count, but at least these are larger 410s. :)

Edit: Lol, looking through the thread just now, I see I already posted the MarkBass 2x15 back in Jan 2016, so... repeat I guess. :D
