I've been reading a lot of past threads, like 15 years old, regarding some manufacturing difficulties and maybe transparency issues Schroeder had. Today, he posted a picture of the current batch of raw cabinets. So I asked what they're made out of. Jorg responded in about 15 minutes. They're birch plywood from Oregon. I may not end up liking the finished product (I bet I will, but you never know). But I can't argue with how communicative he's been.
I asked him a question once on Facebook about 10 years ago about a cabinet of his that I'd bought used. He still wishes me a happy birthday every year.
It's a shame that the designs of the cabs have changed from the slant speakers to the more normal designs. The original lineup was a very niche and unique product, they were cabs that eschewed all pretense of 'flat' or 'full-range' for instead just being the loudest, most mid-forward gig weapons that they could be. I'm sure the current ones are just as good, but perhaps in a more mass-market kind of way.
Maybe one of the first cabs that was recommended to me here was one of the old slanted ones. At the time, I'd never heard of Schroeder, didn't know what to think about the slant design, and went with what I knew locally.
In this current search for a new, smaller cabinet, I saw an old 1215 on my local Craigslist for like $300. I thought about it for a moment, knowing it would it would definitely work live. But that wasn't really my goal so I went for the newer Mini 12+L. I play pretty loud as it is, having a slant cab specifically designed to cut through might actually not be in my best interest.
I read my email again and this is incorrect. Jorg specifically says he uses domestic fir, instead of birch. My mistake.
He is. Years back when he was just getting known in the cabs trade I bought a 21012 and a 410L from him; I remember calling him on the phone and one of the first questions he asked was what style of music I play, who my influences were, and what my favorite brand of amplifier was. His ideas were spot on, and for several years I gigged those cabs and had some of the best tone I could imagine. (Yeah, it WAS severe overkill. Several years and a back surgery later, I am all about small, lightweight gear. Neat seeing Jorg has steered his trade that way.)
Awesome. The cab looks a little undersized for the speaker, I'd be curious to know if the new ones are still the same mid-forward, not much real bass voicing, or if they've gone a bit 'me too'.This arrived yesterday.
Please let me know your thoughts. I'm ampless and I don't see myself going back but if I ever did it would be all about being heard on stage and still relying on the pa for the audience, so Schroeder would be at the top of my list if they're still voiced the same. Wish I still had mine!
This is the Mini 12+L. Schroeder still makes the 12PL, which is 3" wider. I bought it because it's small and light, and seemed like a better value than the Trace Elliot and Markbass cabs. While I can't say how it compares to the old cabs, it is a mid-forward sound and I'm using the voicing knob on the Mesa to balance it. I also expect the tone to settle with use.
