Surely the Steinberger I had mentioned earlier was long-scale, though?!

I sure it was. There are early pics of him holding a Jazz but he obviously never stuck with long scale basses for any length of time. There is a video of him talking about a blues project he was doing a few years ago. In the interview he talks about playing and how his small hands always caused trouble with standard basses. He even holds his hands up to the camera and they are very small.
