Thanks for your comments. When Scott and I were discussing models, I told him I liked the Corto shape but the other features of the Fusion. He told me about the Especial model (on his website). The moniker Especial II is related to the fact that it will have two pickups rather than the standard solo neck pickup. According to the serial number Scott provided, mine will be the 7th Especial he has made to date.

Welcome to the club! I too am waiting on a cypress flood build. Mine is a CBass with a maple neck and black hardware/trimmings. We are going for that older 50s honey blonde/butterscotch look like the early fender p basses.

Well ...the Eclipse HY5 has found a new home next to HY5 #2. Really an amazing piece of work, I'm grateful the seller worked with me on the purchase.

Anyone out there have a fretless HY5? I'm considering switching my current build to fretless.

Is your current build another Hy5? If so I would say go fretless since you've already got the fretted covered. I've been tempted to do a four string with the Hy5 pickup configuration. Basically a Corto2 with the pickups moved right up against the neck and in the middle position.

I have a CBass on order for next year and would love to add a fusion with the DiMarzio Model One pickup for more of a Gibson look and tone. Would have to sell one of current basses though first to do that, either my fusion or mystic build. Neither one of which I really want to part with but I have some serious gas for new ideas!

Yeah, it's another HY5, Scott still has the neck from the HY5 prototype (!) . He's going to build a SKY5 with the older style narrow string spacing for me, which is something I really want, plus it would be cool to have HY5 #1 and 2. However I'm thinking of asking him to switch the SKY5 build to fretless with the newer wider spacing, and saving the proto neck for the next build. I thought the narrow spacing was the best thing ever, especially for playing with a pick. Then I got the Eclipse bass and I realized I like the wider spacing almost as much.

Model one would be sweet in a fusion! I've always wanted an SD Curlee with double model one pickups.

The Especial II I ordered from Scott won't be finished until June sometime. While waiting I was thinking about hardshell case vs. gig bag. When I spoke with Scott last fall, he said both the case and bag were good quality - no doubt true. I won't be touring or traveling much with this bass, so no need for a bomb proof system here. Just wondering what others experiences have been with the gig bags Scott currently ships new basses with. Any info would be appreciated.

I would recommend the case. They are guitar cases I believe, as a Birdsong is about the size of an electric guitar. I had a bass shipped in a gig bag and while it does the job, it doesn't offer nearly as much protection. The gig bag I had was a TKL, no clue what he is using now though. The case is a little bigger, but the Birdsong's fit so well in them.

Oh man... I've been playing this bass for a little less than a year now, but it has completely changed my life. It's a prototype, the first time Scott used the Shortbass body on an official Birdsong from what I understand. It's a cherry body with a maple neck that has a cool finish to it. I play pretty aggressive prog () and even with just the lace sensor in the neck, this bass totally delivers. It delivers so well that I had to go ahead and order a 2nd Birdsong, code name "The Talisman"... and now I'm going to be selling the rest of my basses! As soon as possible, I'll be a Birdsong only guy ;) And talking to Scott on the phone is a blast, I highly recommend that anyone thinking about ordering a bass give him a call.

Just throwing it out there for anyone who may be interested...

I googled Birdsong Guitars rather than type in the address directly, and the google results bring up reviews for the company. There were three reviews and two of them were 1 star ratings. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but I'm sure many of you, like me, would speak very highly of Scott and the company.

I figured I would mention it in case anyone wanted to give him a rating. Hate the thought of someone googling the company and seeing the bad ratings, as Scott has always been incredible to work with based on my experiences.

Also, here is a pic of my latest build! A cypress bodied CBass. It will get a maple neck and board and be trimmed out in black ebony and hardware :)
