I only bite my nails if I'm too lazy to get out the nail clipper, and I don't bite them all the way to the part where it's attached. I bite them in a "grooming" manner.

Biting your fingernails.

I bit mine all the time until I picked up a classical guitar and grew nails to play it. What really made it bearable to not bite was keeping them filed nice and smooth on the edges. Having no snags or rough spots to start a bite made all the difference for me. It's worked for me for the last ten years or so
