Where's a good source for sound effects that I can insert into my recordings?

You know... explosions, gun shots, car horns, foghorns, a hammer pounding on an anvil (for epic Manowar Hammerfall D&D metal), church bells, chirping birds, cheesy sci-fi/UFO sounds, [fill in the blank].

I remember years ago, before mp3s, they used to sell these plain old audio CDs that had like a few hundred weird random sound effects crammed onto them. I imagine the... sound effect supplying gnomes... have advanced beyond that. No? Yes?

Cripes... I feel silly for asking this.... :scowl:

Don't feel silly and without having go to far afield or spend big money the answer you seek is right at home. For reaism and great sample rate nothing beats yes you're sitting on it. All the sound effects you mentioned are right there in Hi Def, 24/96. Mic technique? Point and shoot. "Cheesy sci-fi sounds, chirping birds, explosions", are right there. Sample some today!

They have pretty much everything here. Thousands of sounds and multiple choices of most. They even have instrument sounds, loops...I really love this site, and it's free.

Hope this helps, I would like to hear of others if anyone knows.

you know what is GREAT for this kind of stuff...go buy computer games and install them...than find the folder it uses for all its sounds. example....Civilization IV has TONS of sounds. some are so funny i cry when i hear them. You can get bullet shots, sounds of men marching, a caveman grunting, a horse running, people digging holes, the sounds of cars, airplaines, and many many other things!

Yes...this can be very risky if you plan on releasing/selling and of the recordings...you will need a syncronization licence.

Sound dogs gives you the preview (reduced quality) for free, and will sell you the stock file and that gives you permission for it's use.

Be Careful!, imagine what being sued by Nintendo would be like. (Them: 14 High Priced Lawyers vs. Me: Legal Aid)
