Black strings?

Hi. I play a p bass copy at church that is strung with black coated strings. These strings have no silk at the tuner or ball end, they are solid black all the length of the string.
I really like these strings, but the problem is this: The bass belongs to a member of the church who no longer attends, as he married and moved away. They have been on the bass forever. I have asked him before what brand of strings they were, but he replied that they've been on the bass so long he can't remember which ones they are. Does anyone here have a clue from my description?

I have read some reviews that say these are higher tension strings. I have a Squier Affinity P. The neck is rather thin. Does anyone out there have experience with these strings on that particular bass? I want to put .045-.105's on it.

Yes, there are a few different manufacturers of black coated strings. This is why I described them as being black for the length of the string. They do have silk wrap next to the tuner end of the string, but it is a black wrap. I have seen ones with yellow silk, and ones I think with red silk. Do the DR Black Beauties have black silk wrap on the tuner ends of the string? If not, they are not what I'm looking for.

Thanks, mmbongo. I assume since you didn't say, you have no idea what they might be.
One of the things that strikes me about the posts here and elsewhere about the DRs is the idea that the coating wears or flecks off. These strings have been on this bass for at least a year, probably more like 2 years, and have been played regularly in that time. They look brand new. No wear on the strings whatsoever. However, the bass is played by 3 different people, two of which use their fingers, and one who plays occasionally with a pick. The coating seems to be rather thick, and it seems to have been put on the string before it is wrapped around the core. They appear to be roundwounds.
I'm also sorry for the confusion regarding the silk. In my first post I was going by memory, but I played it again tonight, and they definately have a silk wrap, although a black one.
Since they don't seem to be DRs, I wonder what they might be. My luck they'll be a set that a lot of folk figure are junk, lol. Can't help that, if they are. I really like these strings and would love to find out exactly what they are.

Since you say, the strings are on the bass since really long time, and the fact that they have a silk wrapping,the strings you are looking for are alomost 100% sure black nylon tapewound strings.

A lot of company's produce this type of strings. There is a nice thread about them (comprehensive list of tapewound strings or something like that), so there you can search which one does have the black silk wrappings.

Rotosound's have gold silk wrappings and Labella's have dark purple silk. (I think the Labella's are highly advisable)
