Blown cab?

So I have a hartke lh1000 running into a 2/15 cab. Carvin 400 watt speakers. I bridged the amp just to try it. Only 5 mins later to hear nothing coming from the cab. It's a 4 ohm cab. The speakers made no noise like they were hurting and I had the volume on 2 so it wasn't like I was pushing the amp hard at all. So does this sound like a blown cab to anybody else??
 
Did you switch the amp to bridged mode with the power off before latching the speakon cable?
Could be cab, if the cab uses a 1/4" jack is the cable still seated?
The speaker cable could have a bad connection?
The amp could have failed?
Your instrument cable could have failed?

Time to start a process of elimination.

It's not the amp I ran it to another cab and it worked fine.bridge switch was on.
 
Using a 1/4" phone plug for connecting an amp in bridge is dangerous. Don't do it, Speakons only in bridge.

Use a 1'4: cable into the cabinet and connect a 9V battery across the tip and the sleeve. You should get a good clunk from the cabinet. If not then you have a faulty cabinet.

I didn't connect it in bridge mode I turned it off then checked it. I know the battery check. Anyhow the speakers are blown. Guess 800 watts isn't enough for the head.
 
When reproducing bass a rule of thumb is that the drivers will run out of excursion at about half of their rated thermal power. Add to that the Carvin drivers are in a cabinet that was not designed to support them make the situation worse.

I'm really sorry that your drivers failed. :(
What your saying is probably rite but I will say that carvin was not very forth coming with info on what I wanted as far as speakers go. Don't know what else I could've done to the cab design wise to help the speakers. I followed a simple blue print, it's ported,the cab is built exact to specs for any 2/15 cab that I could find.

The cabs internal volume and porting need to be done AROUND the speakers T/S parameters.

If you "cloned" another 2X15 cab, then you also need to use the same exact speakers that were in the cab you cloned.
 
You should have measured the internal volume of the cabinet and used a box design program such as WiniSD. Inputting your box's volume and the TS parameters of the drivers to find out what porting would be needed. The carvin PS15 series are not the best but they're not that bad either. Before you replace the drivers you should do as I have suggested here and adjust your cabinet to suit.
 
I was at a gig, using my old GK1001RB into a 4 ohm EV TL cabinet with a Carvin Neo.

We just started playing and the volume was not loud. Nearly immediately, no sound.

The voice coil was completely fried. There was no distortion, clipping or anything. The speaker worked, then it didn't.

The venue had recently remodeled, and I believe there was a power spike or surge and the speaker took whatever the amp put out. I finished the gig with my amp plugged into a 12" Peavey floor monitor. No problems with that except it definitely wasn't a bass cabinet.

And that's what I did. It's ported too.

I don't understand what your talking about. Sorry your obviously more educated in this than I am. I'm just a guy who made a cab and got the best speakers my money could buy. I've done this before with no problems and didn't need charts and measurements for any of it just wire it and go. Anywho thanks everybody.
 
I'm not a fan of Carvin's speakers but if you got lucky once building a cab (a bookshelf with a front on it) and mounting some speakers in it that worked well, you got lucky. Speaker cabinets need to be designed for a speaker's needs to couple to the surrounding air, otherwise you could just hang them in free air and they would work fine.

Sounds like the speakers were not loading to the environment properly (due to a random "cab" blueprint) and with sufficient amp power they burnt out. Manufacturers had to deal with this exact problem when amp power started going up. They could no longer just build a pretty box and throw some speakers at it ;).
