Blown Speaker or so I thought ... but maybe

I know almost nothing about amp/speaker construction.

My Yorkville xm100 amp seemed to lose most of its volume and sounded rough. Buzzy but more rough, cutting in and out. Unplayable. My headphones worked fine when plugged in. I took the speaker out and didn't see anything odd and it seemed to go in and out smoothly, but assumed it was blown ??

As I was reinstalling the speaker I noted that the wiring clips seem really loose. Didn't seem right so I crimped the connectors a bit and made them tight. When I turned the amp back it shows no sign of cutting out or being buzzy.

Could that have caused my issue ? I did not see anything like that mentioned when I researched the problem. However for 100W it seems quiet. Its been a while since I used it. Is there a way to test the volume output ? Is low volume a symptom of something ?

Loose wires could definitely cause the cutting out problem you had.

Yes. I've had it happen twice. Once a solder joint broke, in the second case, the cause was a curious and determined little tom cat named Pierrot, who reached into the port of my 12/12/6/1 fEARful. I stopped him gently, but didn't realize until I was at a performance the next day that the cab was hosed.

I've had a ceiling speaker do the same crackling sound, tightening up the clip did the job, no noise since.

thanks for the replies. I feel pretty lucky this was not the worst case scenario. live and learn.
