Blue DeTiger??? Really?

I'm sure many of you have heard of Blue DeTiger. She is very pretty, plays the bass reasonably well and she is a social media sensation ( so I have read) But the amount of media attention she is getting stands in no relation to her actual skills. On top of that she is the first female bassist to have a Fender signature bass? This groudbreaking concept she developed with fender. ( A Jazz bass with a humbucker in the bridge position. Wow, I have never heard of that!) And on top of that she got onto a SBL Podcast with Scott and Ian for a whole hour and they made her sound like she is the brilliant emerging bass giant. I don't get it. And now that I have watched a few of her videos the YouTube algorithm floods my feed with Blue DeTiger videos. And I don't know how to undo that. Now I worry about Blue DeTiger taking over the bass world more.Help!!! LOL Am I just too old to understand what is going on anymore?

Doesn't have to be for us, but if it brings more attention to bass playing and encourages younger audiences (and female audiences at that) to get into bass it's good for the world.

We currently live in a TikTok world. so there's that. Also, if a bassist is popular enough with a target demographic then that bassist's skill on the instrument is not going to be the deciding factor when it comes to that person getting an artist model - especially when it comes to a company like Fender (remember Pete Wentz)?

The question that needs to be asked, regardless of artist, is....

If one had ONLY heard the music and the playing, without seeing the artist or knowing anything about his/her demographic/gender/ethnicity/appearance/"hotness," etc., would the artist stand out or belong alongside all of the other greats who have gone before?

In the case of Blu, the answer, at least to me, is painfully obvious. AND.... it's not only perfectly OK to say and realize that, but irresponsible not to. As far as her being some kind of "ambassador" to bring young women into the bass world,....well....umm... there's quite a few amazing women who play circles around her who don't didn't need to prance around with their underwear exposed or rely on social media to create demand.

I don't have a daughter, but do have a granddaughter. I'll be exposing her to Esperanza Spalding, Tal Wilkenfeld, and other truly great bassists. Blu .... Not an example for any young woman, bassist or otherwise.

I was kind of shocked to see her on SBL. Especially when Ian was blowing smoke up her ass big time. I know he knows better because Ian is a killer bass player. But then I realized that SBL is still a business and the young girls who might be inspired by Blu looking for lessons are a completely untapped market and I'm sure that Fender was motivated by that as well.
It makes me sad but Madonna was right, we are living in a material world ticktockticktock

What bothers you? Is it that she's young, or female, or both?
