I play with a bunch of bluegrass guys on a semi-regular basis and they don't like it much at all if I play much more than Root-Five with a "two-feel" on the one and the three.
It's considerably more challenging than I would have thought.
The way that they've described the role of bass in bluegrass is, that since there usually isn't any percussion, the bass takes the place of the bass drum and the mandolin takes the place of the snare.
