Bmax maximizer hiss

Has anyone else noticed that using the sonic maximizer on the Bmax introduces a hiss which rises and falls along with the note played? It's not THAT loud, but it's the sort of thing that once noticed, drives you crazy. Ok it doesn't come over in a band setting, but recording with it would be a problem
Or have I just got a faulty unit?
