Actually Carol uses felt taped over the strings with a pick. If you play finger style then use foam under the strings near the bridge. If you go to her website there is a post on this topic under her forums link. Additionally, if you have a nitrocellulose finish be careful of the type of foam used as some cause a chemical reaction that will melt the finish.

A mute near the nut would only affect open strings. Seems to me that it's mostly used by fast slappers. The goal is to silence the strings that are not being played (think about it: a nut mute has no effect on fretted notes).
A bridge mute affects all notes played. The idea is to change the tone and dynamics of all notes. Yes, it could also silence strings that are not being played, but that is not the primary goal.
I use a big car wash sponge cut down to proper size. you can get multiple mutes out of one big sponge
