Bongo Alternative?

Is there a cheaper alternative to the Music Man Bongo 5 String.
Like some bass that has a similar tone and feel with 5 strings for cheaper then the bongo.

What Cheese said and then replace the preamp with an Audere Classic 4-Band preamp. The Bongo has high mid and low controls.

There is nothing out there that can replicate the range of tones you can coax out of a Bongo. Why settle for second best when you can have the best?

That isn't reality though.

A good, used Bongo should still be able to be had for $800-1000.

And no, not really.

You need to go ahead and get a Bongo. Or do what I did. Get four or five.

Nope.

They look like a toilet seat, and sound like a really really really amazing toilet seat.

All kidding aside, Bongos are really great sounding instruments, and that's the reason they're so popular (and so expensive new.) There's not much out there that recreate that sound.

Wals and Bongos do share some characteristics, but I guess Wal wouldn't really qualify and cheaper. Or easier to get.
