Is any one familiar with "On The Road" by Jack Kerouac?
Interesting book about a bunch of guys that are in college around 1947 and they kind of come together and sort of start the Beat Generation. One of the Main charecters of the book is Neal Cassady. He is portrayed as Dean Moriarty.

He shows up again in Tom Wolfs "Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test". A book about the late 1960s acid heads lead by Ken Kesey, One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, in California. I just started to read it.

I read it a few years ago after having read some of Kerouac's more auto-biographical books. It was a little bit of a slog for me; but he does capture a time, place and feeling. He also has a great eye for what makes different parts of this country special. After you have finished the book, check out this online discussion on Slate.com it helped me sort out why I both loved and hated the book.

Cassady was one of the most influential people of the counterculture in the 50's and 60's. Truly a larger than life individual.
