I said flats and tubes as that's the closest I could find. I don't use flats often, but I do use nice broken in "pure nickle" strings. I like everything nice and round and thumpy. 15 years playing electric bass, and I still have to remind my self to add some mids and highs for the benefit of the mix.
Smooth. Warm. Clean. Modern. Hi-fi - without being harsh, brittle or "clanky".
I favor the sound of wide-spectrum humbuckers, a high-quality onboard preamp, and a neck-through instrument strung low and played with a light touch - fingerstyle or with pick.
High-quality three-way cabinets with multiple 12" sub-woofers, 6" midrange drivers and tweeters. High-end tube preamp and a high-powered SS power amp.
I use my fingers with nickelwound strings. I also try to experiment with my hands to get the tone and the attack i'm looking for. I would like to be a better pick player and will surely add that to my arsenal of tones. Tone is subjective and each song could call for a different one. IME I found a string I like and can trust and I try to get my bass tone by how I attack the string and where I play in relation to the pickup. It has worked very well for me so far. I have played piano for years and I strive to have that kind of connection between the notes I play on the bass. Thinking in phrases instead of individual notes
I like a tone that is either very bright and articulate, or one that is growly and midrangey. I pick basses based on whether they can give me these tones!
I use Fender Super Bass 8250s, which are nickelplated steel roundcore/taperwound strings. They very punchy and have very good high end responce. I play with my fingers thru a '08' MIA Fender Jazz V. It's my sound and it works fine.
