Boss GT-1000 Core noise issue

Hi! I just bought a new GT-1000 Core, hoping to get a bit of extra processing power to replace my HX Stomp. I'm getting a lot of noise when plugged in, like static and crackling when I touch the metal parts of my bass or the knobs on the unit itself. My HX Stomp was dead quiet even at very high gain levels. The Boss is another story.

It affects my Dingwall Combustion 5 with an EMG pre-amp, a Fender Player Precision, even a G&L Fallout electric guitar but not my Ibanez SRC6 which bothers me even more. I tried to swap cables to no avail. When I lift the unit with my hand, the unwanted noises stop but it's still way noisier than the HX Stomp at high gain settings.

It looks like a grounding issue, but why would the SRC6 not be affected?
I sold the HX Stomp yesterday but didn't ship it yet because I'm thinking of keeping it and sending back the Boss unit.

Hoping to get a few words of wisdom from the Talkbass crowd.

I just tested the ground lift. When it's lifted, there's about 1/4 second latency introduced, a drop in volume and it sounds like the bass was heard through a 100% wet reverb.
This unit is going back for sure but I'm not 100% convinced I want it replaced...

Just to make sure, do you have the Core plugged into an amp as well? Or are you using headphones? If it’s not plugged into an amp (or some other grounded destination) you might get those noises. Also make sure that ground lift is disabled.

I'm having a major issue with noise on mine using headphones. I've had it for some time and this just started. I've trouble shot everything and when I get back into town I'll be sending it in to get looked at. I'm bummed but I love my Core and with a 5 year warranty is no biggie. it's very possible my issue is bad wiring in the buildings, I've been in hotel after hotel. I'm definitely not going to stomp my feet and shed tears because my electronic device is acting up, I'll gladly utilize the warranty and keep on keeping on.

Is that with headphones only, and not plugged into an amp? If so, there is a ground screw that should be used to connect a wire to a proper ground.

I did that to no success, I've used it so many times with headphones only too. Plugged into the amp no issues at all. It's no biggie, I picked up one of those mustang micros (cannot recommend it enough) for my headphone practicing.

I only use it through headphones or as a USB interface so I don't know what it sounds like through an amp.

Now I'm not only ampless but preampless too so I'm on the hunt with a 1K budget. I liked the HX workflow so I'm thinking of upgrading to the Helix LT rather than the Boss offerings...

If you don’t connect it to an amp then this sounds like a grounding issue. There is a grounding screw that can be used to connect a proper ground which should solve this problem, if you decide to try it out more. You also might be able to ground it by connecting usb to a computer or laptop that is plugged into power.

@Derek Williams I'm sure there are workarounds but when I buy new, I want a flawless product. The reseller acknowledged it was a faulty unit so I'm returning it. I'm getting a refund and he doesn't have a replacement unit anyway so I'm checking my options.

It doesn’t sound faulty though, I’m pretty sure a replacement would do the same. It doesnt automatically connect the ground of your audio signal as that would introduce a ground loop if using an amp, so instead you need to connect the ground to something else. This can be common in other devices that can be used with headphones, like the Strymon Iridium (they have a FAQ entry about it)

The weird things happening when I lift the ground point to a very faulty unit though. If this is the expected behavior for this device then I don't want to deal with it and the HX Stomp is a far better product.

It is endlessly more capable than the GT1B. I gave a glarry p bass and the gt1b to one of my soldiers who used to play and wanted to get back into music.

The core is amazing and can do so much more than I've unlocked so far. This issue only started on this trip and away from my home which I have very well grounded and clean power. I'm 75% sure when I get home it'll be good again. But if not, I'll use the warranty.

Good luck, I've gone the boutique pedal route now, and would possibly looking a GCX controller.

Does the noise still occur when you do not have the USB cable attached?

I sold my HX for the noise issues when using USB (amongst other things) and replaced it with the GT1k. USB grounding issues are a very annoying issue that seems to strike some and not others, even with the same equipment.
