Boss me-50b

So I bought a used me-50b. Which might have been a huge mistake. It's not quite what I thought it would be but it is cool. I'm just wondering if anyone who uses one has these problems.
You can hear the hits on the strings all the time like its impossible to get the clean tones out of the pedal. And the overdrive setting sounds really bad at full drive. I'm really just wondering if the pedal might be bad.
What's your guys thoughts?

I have a Boss ME50B since late 2010 (It was a Christmas gift) and I used it live for years. Now I use other options but I still keep it at home and I use it from time to time.

The "Overdrive" setting sounds pretty wild event at a low drive settings and it's almost useless. I use the "Natural" setting for a little drive and it works for me.

About the hits on the strings.. I don't know what to say... I never had this problem
