Double Bass Boston Symphony

What exactly IS the role of the double bass in a section you tell me sunny boy

Well, it seems that you need to be playing at an incredibly high caliber to be winning these jobs, or even advancing in rounds. The days of just being able to play in tune are over, you need to be a compete master of your instrument, and perhaps that only comes with maturity. I know I sure don't have the skill!

Here is a story from how auditions used to be...a former teacher of mine, who retired from the Boston Symphony about 10 years ago, took the Detroit audition back in the 50s and no other bass player showed up. He had the G minor da gamba sonata prepared. They told him, well, no one else is here so we'll give you the position...as long as you are here, would you like to play your solo? (!!!!!!!!!!!)

This seems like a fairly extreme case, and it's not what I was getting at at all...Mainly just that the level of expectations of us as "musicians" has rapidly increased...something that can only better us!!
