Boutique brand build time

Having been told what several bass builders earn in a year, I'm pretty certain they're not slow because it's easy money and they're taking it easy. The material costs per bass are high and the margins are low.
What I meant to say is that when you are known and valued for quality above all else, you can take the time you need to build a quality product and your customers will be OK with it.

I'll answer this question in three months. I have a backlog of threads to respond to. It might actually take a year, but don't worry, I'll keep you updated.

Seriously, the responses so far have it covered. A custom builder of anything is not cranking product out on an assembly line. Custom means each bass has it's own issues that have to dealt with, specific woods or parts that have to be obtained, etc. The flow from specing out the bass to shipping can be fraught with delayes at any step.

A reputable builder will be able to give a reasonable estimate of how long your build will take considering all the known factors and back log they have. Where this becomes a real problem, as we have seen with a few notorious builders, is when things like personal problems, illness or business failure totally derail the process.

Why does something that is in demand, and is hand-made by a well-known artisan take longer to get than a mass-produced, machine made thing? 🤔

We may never know. It's one of life's great mysteries.
Let's find out.
