Ditto what @Slevage said about paying only half of original street value for used gear. However, I will make exceptions for barely-used late- or current-model gear.

And ditto @mikecd1 about Pirateship.com. Best deals on shipping.

I sold Acme and Barefaced cabinets here on TB earlier this year. Both went pretty fast, only a few weeks.

I’ve typically had the best luck selling gear between Feb-March and May, when a lot of people have money from tax returns.

Between 60-70% off the price of new and all lightweight cabs in actual pristine condition.

Not running into many problems with myself as i haven't really sold much or even tried to sell much recently. I'm just observing some listings, especially local listings of very clean, premium gear and bottom shelf prices and no one has jumped on them. It puts me in a bad position because i want to snatch up some of this gear as the gas hits harder as the price drops

Pretty sure some of your reviews/posts are responsible for me going off the rails with barefaced and audiokinesis gear. All of which i love by the way.

It’s great gear. If I hadn’t had a few life issues creeping into the picture I’d still be pushing the Barefaced cabs. It’s a little funny, because some of those life issues are what pushed me to explore the light boutique cabs so I could keep gigging. Otherwise I’d probably still be dragging around my Mesa Powerhouse and M6 rig. Aw, who am I kidding. I would’ve ended up trying the Barefaced. I lusted over those for years before buying them.

I think everyone pretty much covered it between trying economic times, general poor brand recognition and resale value for boutique gear, and the difficulty of shipping big items like cabinets, but I will also echo @CascadeBass's sentiment since I am also in PDX: whatcha got?

Has shipping got outrageous? I avoided shipping because of this last year, but someone wanted my audiokinesis really bad but i was getting 150-170 dollar quotes. I must be living under a rock because of never heard of pirate ship so he purchased the shipping/label and i think it came out to $65. I'm assuming those prices even skyrocketed.

yup, i still have a minty fresh M9 and PH410 here but a bad leg injury led me down the dark path of light, powerful cabs. It all started around 2020 and have been trying to shake it ever since. I found a great deal locally on a Super Compact and then lured in by Alex's 20% BF cabs back in 2020.

I too have noticed this but I'm not surprised for all of the reasons mentioned before. I have been amassing a small collection of large, 60s-70s era British cabinets and tube amplifiers over the last couple of years. Whatever market that was there for these when I bought them has pretty much gone away.

I expect this will be the case as long as we are in the current economic conditions and maybe before a bit afterwards.

As a worker in music retail I have also noted that the marketplace has been absolutely glutted with second hand instruments since the pandemic.

My advice would be to post your stuff for sale at 30-40% the new value and wait. Multiple fishing lines in the water etc...

I think the demand for cabinets must be falling over the last few years. More and more people are going amp-less, or just use an amp and cab for stage monitoring and don't need multiple cabinets. I haven't taken my amp or cabs out of my practice room for a long time.

I had a bunch of Carvin BRX cabs I sold over the last year or so mainly because they were just so darn heavy. These days, if it’s over 40 pounds forget it. I see nice cabs on my local Craigslist that weigh 70-90 pounds - just not going to work these days when you can get a 3x10 that weighs 36 pounds. So even if you’re not going ampless, heavy cabs are becoming anachronistic.

True! I almost feel like Marketplace is flooded recently with "i know what i got" prices which dilutes the market of people that truly want to move gear and/or buy gear. As much as i truly dislike shipping, i think selling on TB is the best possible solution. I've purchased items and it has always been a great experience on here. The prices are realistic as i don't seem too many dreamer ads.

absolutely... I won't even to attempt to sell my Mesa PH410 cab as it's roughly 90 pounds. It is an absolute stellar cab but at the weight, there is just not a market for it. The Mesa M9 isn't much better as it is 47-50 as it sits in an Aguilar head case. 150pounds vs my Mesa WD800 and BF SC cab at 34 pounds total.

The demand for amps/cabinets isn’t there like it used to be. Most gigs I’ve played in the past 15 years haven’t required an amp. In some instances, it may have been better to have one because many sound guys are clueless, but most people prefer no amps now. This also goes for guitar players, the best guitarists I know use some sort of strymon/kemper/quad cortex setup.

What is your opinion on the wedgie? I absolutely love them and honestly took mine off Marketplace. This Tri115 i've been eye ballin' might be able to be bought for $300 which should give me something similar to a modular El Whappo.

I love good cabs, own five and use them alternately depending on the band/gig. Everything seems to be slow moving these days for all the reasons previously mentioned, and there is a definite shift to digital modeling. I also consider the famous words of James Careville "It's the economy, stupid". Without getting political, I think uncertainty and dischord make many people hesitant to purchase boutiquey Items.

I also have a very hot-rodded old Dean 5-string tuned EADGC. I listed this stuff on the local FB Marketplace several times without any interest, maybe it's time to try it again.

I remember seeing some Berg cabs on Portland Craigslist not too long ago.

I think it's age throughout the timeline in the community.

The younger beginer player just wants something to get playing, Rumbles galore. As one matures there eyes are opened to other choices, other levels of quality. As one get a little older too, their income can absorb paying for more quality items hence they are more interested in pursuing something off the beaten path, the brands that we are discussing. Then as time and age collide or taste changes we move on. Sometimes the trouble is those who can appreciate our selections up for sale are probably at the same place we are on the timeline.

This is also dependent on whether others develop the same interest in equipment as others who go down this road. Some will always be just as happy playing on their first Rumble amp and have no need to change. Why buy a Lamborghini when a Toyota will get you to the same destination

About a year ago, I took a cab that 25-30 years ago would have been considered “boutique “ to the dump after stripping the hardware. The driver was blown, the ratfur was moldy… could I have rehabbed it? Certainly. But it was WAY down the list of projects that I may never get to. There are two more in my garage that might realize the same fate. Time, space, and mental bandwidth are just as dear to me as money at this point. I love my current working stable, and I’m really hoping that going ampless is in my future, so it’s possible I may never make a large cab purchase again. Kind of sad, but it’s one less thing to worry about at the gig…
