Double Bass bow "explosion"

Just thought I'd share this since it's a pretty funny spectacle. I was playing a show at the Tower Theater in Bend, OR when, much to my surprise, my bow broke in an "explosion" of hair. Thankfully I only bowed three notes on the song, and our set that night didn't have any more bowed stuff in it. One of the audience members was videotaping the song and happened to catch my bow breaking.

That was some solid reaction time right there... Once I was in a rehearsal trialling some nice Kolstein bows, I always like to bring them to rehearsals to see how the other bassists like them, and that happened. I just stood there un sick thinking I broke his bow haha... I got even worse when the conductor stopped wondering why the principal bassist wasn't playing.

Thankfully it looks like it will be an easy fix. It looks like all that really broke is the little piece that holds the hair in the tip of the bow. Everything else seems to be fine, thank goodness. The bow is a CARBOW and I certainly don't have the money to just go out and buy a new one at the moment.

I'm not sure what caused it to break like that, though I did notice it looked a little strange after I got it re-haired a while back. I'm guessing the piece may have gotten stressed when it was removed for the re-hair, and it just happened to break at that moment, which, if it was going to break at any moment, that was probably THE perfect moment.

Chris1125, it's nice to know I'm not the only one that's had this happen. It was tough to stay focused on the music and not start thinking about what I could have possibly done wrong to make my bow break like that.

Thanks for the compliments on the music. If you want to see more you can check out our website where we have some recorded tracks and more videos. Link Removed

Wow! I've never even heard of that happening! You said it looked weird after a rehair, was it like the little piece of wood on the frog behind the hair look like it was coming out? B/c if it did my bow kinda looks like that is that a good or bad thing?? And anyway at least you didn't have any arco after that...
