French bowmaker J-J Augagneur is shown making a violin bow! The combination of hand tools kills, precision machining and intuition is fantastic. Toward the end of the video he tunes the bow with the player - very cool.

I'm wondering if anyone has tuned or tried to lighten a bow by planing etc? I have an inexpensive french bow that is just slightly too heavy for me. I was thinking of trying to lighten it by reworking the tapers. Any thoughts about this?

You need to be careful not to change the balance (unless the bow is not balanced properly). Bring it to a good bow maker who knows what they're doing.

Couldn't agree more. The 'tuning' of the violin bow stick in the video is just done for the camera and the 'story'; the finish would be ruined and we don't see the reinstatement of that! If your bow has been made well, either get used to it ('let the bow teach you') or sell it to someone who does like it, and buy another; but take advice either way.
