Boy, I'm reall starting to hate Facebook!

You realize facebook is not for meeting new people right? Keeping in contact with current friends and family...
That's right, I don't. Yet, I'm reading right now about you talking about such things, and I'm not on Facebook. In fact, the only time I see reference to this idea of "people posting inane prattle" isn't on Facebook... it's here on Talkbass. Facebook is just a communication tool, and at least in my own anecdotal experience, tends to have a lot deeper/useful/interesting conversations and links than I've ever seen on a place like this. See, like I alluded to before, on Facebook you get to CHOOSE who you are interacting with and have the choice of "friending" only people whom you know you share many common interests in and who you respect personally as people. On a site like Talkbass, anyone can muddy up my "feed" (here it's referred to as a forum) with their asinine prattle. If a persons posts here on Talkbass but thinks facebook is "pointless chit chat with idiots" it just means that their own friends in real life are "idots" who "pointlessly chit chat" and that's not Facebook's fault.
If your friends IRL are the kind of people who post about what they had to eat, where they were, or what they lifted in their work out, etc... then THAT'S ON YOU.
So every conversation you have with your friends is deep and on another inhuman level? Or when your friends go "I had the best burger in the world yesterday" you just stop talking to that person?
lol. explain to me in what ways a forum is different than a social media platform. I'll start:
Forums - public (anyone can interact with you)
Social Media - private (you choose who can interact with you)
Forums - ... um...
Social Media - ...hmm....
nope, the only difference I can find is with a forum you have no control (besides "hiding" someone) over who can and can't interact with the things you share and the conversations you have. on social media you get to pick who is included in your conversations (SHARE on facebook is for all intents and purposes the same as NEW THREAD on talkbass for example).
Forums ARE a form of SOCIAL MEDIA. They are just an OLDER version of the same idea.
Time--the very reason Matticus cited for not signing up for social networking sites and the main reason I haven't signed up for FB. I don't have to make decisions here about friend requests, what to put on my page, privacy controls, when I get updates and from whom, etc. Personally, I don't care so much about making a distinction in terms, but FB is significantly different from TB. And unlike you, I don't think those differences are all positives for FB.

right, because you don't get to choose who's "updates" you see here, you automatically see EVERYONE'S UPDATES and there's nothing you can do about it. You're forced to try and weed through page after page of "updates" (called "threads" here) to find the ones that might be interesting to you.
this place also has a personal page in which you must decide what to put up.
...because talkbass DOESN'T HAVE privacy controls, so yeah, you don't have to "make decisions" about them because they don't exist... there simply ISN'T any privacy. if you're comfortable with that here, then you don't need to worry about it on FB either because you can just leave yourself with the same level of privacy as you already have here (y'know... NONE).
You can't choose who you get updates from here, because you automatically get updates FROM EVERYONE ON THE SITE. that's why there are pages upon pages of threads that you've undoubtedly never read and must search through to find things of interest to you.
my point is that you are imagining distinctions and differences that simply don't exist. if anything, the things you don't like about FB are actually a much bigger problem for an internet forum... yet here you are. I'm just saying, you don't seem to have a very good grasp on what a site like FB is for (or how it works), and you already apparently really enjoy OLDER forms of social media or else you wouldn't be currently discussing this topic with me on an older social media platform known as talkbass.
If Facebook really wants to add something useful, how about a schedule section for bands? That's the one thing that MySpace still has over Facebook.
I have a way of doing that without having to sign on to a computer.
So people dont make new friends on facebook, they only keep in touch with people they already know?

No one knows about it, so IT won't block it so you can waste your time and not study in school.

I've never once "made a new friend" on facebook. I don't even know how one would go about such a thing. in my experience facebook is used as a way to have large group conversations about ideas, articles, links, videos, etc with friends and family. People post things they are interested in and then friends and family discuss those topics. If your friends and family find things like "I went to the mall and bought a tshirt" to be stimulating conversation, then yeah, facebook is going to suck... and you should probably find some new friends if that isn't your thing. However, if you have interesting friends who find interesting topics and such to discuss, it's basically like a big "off topic" section that is populated by people you have actually met IRL along with the "best of the best" people you've met online on other sites and "friended" on facebook.
Thats cool, to you theyre all forms of social media, I get that. I dont know if everyone would agree, but in a general sense, sure.
My question - If Im already using one form of Social Media then why the need to go and register on various forms of social media?
Actually, my real question is why do people like kserg and baalroo get so up in arms over people saying that they dont want to sign up for a social media site?

Plenty of people, including noncollege students, know of and use facebook. Its known enough that IT at my work has blocked it. (yet they havent blocked talkbass
)
Thats cool, I guess. Like I said, Im online all day at work, and when Im not working I dont feel the need or desire to continue doing so. If I want to have a conversation with all my friends at once I'll throw a party and invite them over. If I feel like talking to one or two people I'll call them and meet up with them. I dont even care for conversing over the phone really, so I dont have a need to do so online.
well, for example, most of my friends don't use Talkbass... so, only using talkbass would mean that I wouldn't be interacting with many of my friends.
If you're just referring to "the big two" for example (twitter and facebook) then the difference is that it's easy to "follow" someone and they don't have to follow you back. There's much less discussion on twitter, it's much more similar to something like Reddit or blogging, where you just post things that you find interesting and people follow others who they think find interesting things or say things that will make them think/laugh/etc.
Facebook on the other hand, is generally a place for friends and family to interact in the same way that we interact here on Talkbass. You make posts about topics/videos/articles/etc and then your friends and family discuss those posts in a "comments" thread. Basically, different focuses mean slightly difference user bases.
So was the big shift from everybody using Myspace (me included) to Facebook a movement for people to be less social and focus more on people they know in real life?
I just dont see the necessity to the whole paradigm shift. Myspace, to me, was great for what it was and the reason I didnt want to move on to facebook. Because everyone else decided to use fb instead of ms wasnt a good enough reason for me, and I really wasnt using myspace much anymore either, in favor of real life social interaction.
