I separated employees from students on our content filter at work. Faculty can now use facebook, It's going to be a pretty interesting graph at the end of the year.

MEAP scores are going to be interesting as well.

right, because you don't get to choose who's "updates" you see here, you automatically see EVERYONE'S UPDATES and there's nothing you can do about it. You're forced to try and weed through page after page of "updates" (called "threads" here) to find the ones that might be interesting to you.

Well, I'm not forced to do anything, of course. But my points here are:
1. No updates are posted on my page/profile, so I don't feel the obligation to respond to anything like an FB user often does.
2. These "updates" are sorted into topical subforums I can choose to enter or not, depending on what I'm interested in that day. And it's not onerous to look through even the busiest subforums: If one comes to TB twice a day, they might see 2-3 new pages of threads in Basses, 1-2 new pages in Amps and 1-2 in OT (the three subforums I visit the most by far). And to state the obvious, each thread has a title that usually tells me what the topic is. I can look through those pages in a minute.

Lol, I've seen FB pages and the difference between the typical page there and the typical TB profile is dramatic in terms of content and time spent. This is, of course, because hardly anyone spends any time at all looking at one's TB profile and nothing gets posted there.

...because talkbass DOESN'T HAVE privacy controls, so yeah, you don't have to "make decisions" about them because they don't exist... there simply ISN'T any privacy. if you're comfortable with that here, then you don't need to worry about it on FB either because you can just leave yourself with the same level of privacy as you already have here (y'know... NONE).

True enough. But you don't have to put anything in your profile on TB. The same may be true on FB, but here you can do so while still accessing the entire site and sampling as many viewpoints and as much information as you like. For FB, a more closed system is certainly more desirable, but I like the openness and diversity of TB on days that I do have time to explore it more.

You can't choose who you get updates from here, because you automatically get updates FROM EVERYONE ON THE SITE. that's why there are pages upon pages of threads that you've undoubtedly never read and must search through to find things of interest to you.

See above. But also, I learn things here on TB I might never know about if I had to sit down and choose specifically who and what I hear from as one really must do on FB.

my point is that you are imagining distinctions and differences that simply don't exist. if anything, the things you don't like about FB are actually a much bigger problem for an internet forum... yet here you are. I'm just saying, you don't seem to have a very good grasp on what a site like FB is for (or how it works)

and you already apparently really enjoy OLDER forms of social media or else you wouldn't be currently discussing this topic with me on an older social media platform known as talkbass.

By that rationale, so do you.

I don't assert that FB is inferior to TB, I'm simply explaining why I prefer the latter.

Ive resolved this problem by refusing to sign myself up for social networking sites, aside from one that isnt very popular. I spend enough time on the computer as it is, trying to make friends online is the last thing I want to do with my free time.

I'd rather be doing the things that people are writing about. I found that most people were just bragging about crap so I quit it.
