It was good. Not fantastic. Seems to be one of those shows, like the sopranos, that some people love. There were some points, like conversations between Walter and Jesse, that I had to fast forward through. The whole bit where Walter happens to walk in while the girlfriend is ODing, then happens to run into her father at a bar, who then happens to cause a mid air, that happens to happen right over Walter's house...kind of ridiculous.
Those were some of the most powerful and disturbing scenes I've ever seen. Walter and Jane's dad in the bar was fantastic. I love the little moments where Walter displays his brilliance like when he was talking about why water on Mars is important. And it was good seeing John DeLancie again. I don't think I've seen him in anything since Star Trek. So much was said in the scene where Jane died. He did cause her death by nudging Jesse (I think that's what happened). He let her
choke to death. Did he do it for Jesse's benefit? For his own? Was he jealous of their closeness? I think yes to all three. There was so much going on.

Granted, the series of events leading up to the plane crash was a little contrived, but I didn't mind it.

Hahaha I wasn't even referencing the upcoming spinoff when I said better call Saul. I still think it has potential. Breaking Bad was huge on character development so who's to say we won't get that in Better Call Saul?

I'm rewatching the show and I'm at season 4, episode 1 "Box Cutter". Why exactly do you think Gus killed Victor like that? Was it because Victor presumed he could take over the lab? Was it because he allowed himself to be seen near Gale's shooting? Was it just Gus showing Walt and Jesse how ruthless he is? Thoughts?

One of the absolute best ever, but not the best ever. To me that title goes to either Oz or All in the Family.

I've never seen Oz, but All in the Family doesn't quite get it. It started out so strong, but it ended so weak. The last season is almost unwatchable, and then they transitioned it into Archie Bunker's Place, which was worse.

Breaking Bad is probably not "the Greatest Show Ever Made," but what it has going for it is how strong it ended. Very high quality over five seasons; 62 quality 48 minute episodes.

Poor All in the Family went nine seasons; 206 1/2 hour episodes. If they had ended on episode 186, "The Stivics go West," then it just might have been the Greatest Show Ever Made. It would certainly be a contender.

I guess I will have to watch Oz.

Yes to all.

To me, Carol O'Connor transcended acting and became the character and the writers completely nailed the way he thought. That's why I say it's the best.

Walt and Jesse talk later about Gus' reasoning for slashing Victor, and one of the reasons they figured was that Victor "flew too close to the sun"; I think it was all the reasons the Captain stated.

The DVD bonus features show all the different takes of that scene. Some more gory, others not so much. VG went with a medium version.

Oz was good for the first couple of seasons but lost me after that. Too phony. I know BB was pretty phony also, but not on the level of Oz.

"Vikings" is better than Oz.

As good as Better Call Saul is, I still think a Gus spinoff woulda been epic.

In my rewatching, I noticed in flashback scene with Uncle Hector and the cousins as kids.... when one kid says he wants to kill the other and Hector holds his head underwater....in the beginning of that scene Hector is on the phone saying "I don't care who he is. Big generalissimo chicken man"....or something like that. Gus's back story is so much more interesting to me than Saul's. Who is he? Where does that ruthlessness come from? They've hinted that either he was big in the Chilean military, or some kind of kingpin there, or part of an important family, or who knows what. He was by far the most interesting character on the show. But it never would've worked cuz Americans need a main character they can relate to. It would've been hard for them to come up with redeeming characteristics for Gus to make him not a complete monster.

I've never seen another show that comes close to making me love it as much as BB. I like the cold openings, the guessing games (What the hell is that purple bear.... does his house blow up... ***?), and the suprising evolution from Walter White. It was just near flawless.

I liked Oz, Hell on Wheels, Walking Dead (for 4 season anyway), Battlestar Galactica, and such. BB tops them all.

EDIT:

Dexter I think came close as it's in second place for me. It was just the ending that burned me. I love Vikings but it's too short.

Are you saying that giving up the chance to move to Argentina with a smoking hot girl he loved and who loved and accepted him with his son and without the hallucination of his father and without the need to kill....in favor of becoming a sad lumberjack.....wasn't the best ending?

Ha. Exactly. I would have preferred that he was arrested or killed. I also wanted to see him and his sister hook up just to sprinkle in some more awkwardness.

He ended it saying that everyone around him would be killed. His son and girlfriend shouldn't be excluded. I think it would have been cool to have Lumen kill Hannah out of jealousy or something. Ahhhh Lumen... She had to be the hottest chick in the whole show, including side characters and extras.
