Breaking Strings

In the last 6 years or so I've broken 3 strings: B roundwound, an E flat, and an A round.

The B turned out to be a saddle burr, but the other two are unknown. Neither was old, and the A round was from my old endorser (Dark Horse). They'd had a questionable batch of core wire, but the string I broke was NOT from that batch.

The E flat was a D'Addario XL, which happened to also be the ONLY set of flats the local music store had for replacement, since I had another gig that night...

Is it me, or are strings lower quality over the last decade or so than in the 40+ years before that? I never broke a string until this run.

The first time I played bass with a “band” I broke a string. It was a borrowed beater bass. It was 1978 or so. I broke one probably 25 years ago, just snapped at the head when I was installing it.
I am not gentle with basses.

It's just you.... Nah really it's something that happens. But I haven't had any bad strings when I bought old stock packs though. I've had a couple bad new ones and broke a couple.

Aside from checking the bridge saddles and the nut for burrs or sharp edges, the variables are primarily installation technique and playing technique.

Where are the strings breaking?
