The freakin' 4005V. Wow.

I'm so glad Ben Hall and the folks at Rickenbacker decided to reissue this mythical beastie.

This is the first image we saw of the British Racing Green 4005V several months ago:

Upon arrival after purchasing through Thunder Road Guitars:

She's beautiful as is, but I'm a sucker for gold plate enhancements. I especially thought the BRG would benefit:

LOVE the gold pickguard/truss cover. Makes SUCH a difference. Pure class!!
I wouldn’t add gold hardware, that would take it over the top, for me. Your “golden touch”es are perfect, to my eye!

Thanks @eddybuzzard. I agree - I fell in love with BRG the first time I saw it. I missed out on the BRG 4002 on the left when it was posted a few years ago.

Thanks for your kind comments, @ShawnG - mucho appreciated! Nope, no way I'd add gold hardware. The only other experimentation I'll be doing is deciding on the knobs. The silver top knobs on the bass right now are from my 2014 4003. The stock black knobs that the bass came with don't pop with the gold plates at all - the silver tops are much more classy. I'll post some updated photos once the new knobs arrive.

That British Racing Green is just so live. You need something British Leyland to go with it. Perhaps a Jaguar or a TR-6

I also hope they bring back the 4003FL! I played a 4001FL at a local music store a few years ago and it was the greatest fretless bass I've ever played.

The bass version shouldn't be a problem; it's the higher tension of the guitar strings, primarily 12-strings that have been the issue.

You know what I’ll admit it. I have post history of me dogging on Ricks over the past 5 years. However, in the last 2-3 months I’ve had quite a few customers new (post 2020) Ricks and I have to say I really like them! Especially with these 4005s, total GAS, especially after looking at yours. Do you have any sound demos?

I completely agree. Ben Hall has obviously been listening since taking the reigns a few years ago, and I have no doubts there will be more advancements (and maybe) reissues to come.

If they do reissue the 8-string in the future, I sincerely hope they solve the issue of the strings rattling against each other. I've only experienced one 8-string in my time as a Ric dealer years ago, so I don't know if all of their 8s had this issue or if the one we received was a bad apple.

HA! Good suggestion. One of my old co-workers is a HUGE Jaguar fan. I should ask him if he still owns one and plan a photo shoot if he's open to it.

That would be something, wouldn't it Jeff!?! If it happened, which color would you choose?

Also - as the resident historical expert of large-bodied Ric basses, who at Rickenbacker is actually responsible for designing the 4005? The only references I can find state it's Roger Rossmeisl, however, he'd left to work at Fender 3 years earlier in '62.

It's time baby...it's definitely time! The shallow neck on these things is AMAZING, and the tone is wonderful (flats for me!)

I am still loving mine, and yes, it has left the house and done just fine out in the wild. The only downside is that it is a tight fit in the Mono gig bag I normally use for transport, so I opted to take it in the case instead, which is a little less convenient.

I don’t at this time, however, there are some videos on YouTube which may (or may not) be helpful.

I believe the 4005V videos I’ve seen were recorded with the stock round wound strings. Some videos are better than others, but I’m a flats guy and truly believe flatwound strings really make these babies shine (I immediately restrung mine with TI flats.)

As far as I’m aware, the toasters used on the 4005V’s are no different than what Ric used in the 60’s. Talkbass member and resident Ric guru @Jeff Scott played a 4005WB strung with TI flats for decades, so I suggest reaching out to him as he’s posted MANY recordings of his bass which I’m sure he’d be happy to share.
