Double Bass Bridge adjusters - too high?

Sorry if this has been asked before but how high is too high? The gap between the bottom of the top half of my bridge and the top of the adjuster plate is currently 1/4" but I want to try raising my action a little bit. What is the upper limit to what people would considure a "safe" height. Thanks.

A rule of thumb is that the exposed threads on the adjuster should be no more than 1/2 the total length of the threads. Without knowing the actual total length, I would say the you are approaching the upper limit as it is.
