A really heavy mute will kill tone and volume but allow you to practice at midnight. Otherwise, try to always practice with a very full bass sound (no mute). Gary Karr once said that lazy instruments are often played by lazy people. Make the bass resonate, not just sound, as your middle approach IMO.
Yes but remove it for last sessions before performance. The heavy rubber completely alters bowing response. You can have some rude awakenings when you take it off later.
