Brilliant idea? Or ....??

I just had a brilliant idea, and want to know it it would be feasible or not; I also want to know if anyone's done it...

Why not have a DI built into a bass? Are there shielding concerns? Do they take up too much space...

Sound engineers are always looking for a balanced line/DI, so it would make it a bit easier...
although, I'm thinking about cabling issues...

Biggest issue is probably space, at least it would be on my basses, followed by weight, particularly if you're going to stick a little transformer in there (sure they're only small but its still more weight).

You could pull off some cool things though, like phantom power, which allows you to do some funner things with the preamp. Aren't some of the Alembics running like a 5 prong connector, which'd be a balanced output and power input.
