Broken Thumb :(

I have to wonder if they could modify you cast to fit around an electric neck. granted, I think it could really screw up your left hand technique if you play without any pressure from your thumb.

As for upright... my bet is there's no way without risking further damage to your hand, or at least really increasing your recuperation time.

Ouch, my dude. Ouch. Your bass family all wishes you a speedy recovery and that you not only don't lose the muscle memory you had but that it comes back even STRONGER.

I don't want to seem insensitive offering this, because it may just serve as a tease and nothing more, but this COULD very well help maintain strength. Is it worth a shot?

I can relate. I broke my fretting wrist in December 2001 and thought it was a sprain. I found out two months ago that it was broken and has been ever since.

The bone that is broken is called the scaphoid and apparently it doesn't get very much blood flow, so it never healed.

I'm looking at surgery in order to fix it and the specialist says I'll be in a cast for three months, followed by two months of rehab.

The thought of not playing bass is simply not an option. There is a thread on TB I saw not long ago that was asking why we played bass. My answer is simple: I can not imagine not playing bass. Ever since I first picked up a bass in 1983, it felt like an extension of myself.

So (finally), you asked if anyone had been in a similar situation. I am, and this is my response:

I'm learning all over again, but left handed. It's slow, and I'm not very good. But I have a lot of bass playing that I can work on while I'm healing.
