Bronco/Mustang bass modified!?

So I have my old Squier Bronco (Mustang style) bass still that I snapped the neck on a few years back and I wanna get a replacement neck for it and mod it out. It came with a 30" scale neck I believe and was just curious if I could put a 32"scale scale neck without having to shave away the pocket any? Also what would be a good pickup for the middle position?? Like humbucker style?

You can usually pickup a used Bronco on the Guitar Center site for about $80. Might be easiest to just start from there...

That's what I did and I'm very happy with the outcome.

I used GFS Lil' Killer humbucking rail pickups (any Strat sized pickup will fit the existing route) and wired them with a series/parallel switch.

Best of luck with the build! If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Bob

I did a similar build a while ago.. Starting with a bronco body, I was able to find a squire mustang neck 30" scale that fit perfect! What i did for pickups were a set of epiphone thunderbird humbuckers . Neck p/u being in the same positon as the existing and i set the bridge p/u just off the bridge. its got a sound of its own! Its like a little pocket rocket!!!

No problem using a 32" neck on the bronco to replace the 30" neck. Finding one would be harder than installing it. You will have to move the bridge one inch toward the base of the body & all will be fine again. I hang out on another bass forum where basses are modified to different scale lengths all the time. If you were fretless scale would not be an issue. Just tune it and learn to ignore the old dots. Take care. Bob

This is true, but realize that what you're doing is turning the Bronco into a 32" scale bass in order to accommodate the neck frets. You will also have visible holes in the body when the bridge is moved down...and you'll need enough room to move it two inches, not one.

My bet is that you can find a 30" neck a LOT cheaper than a 32" neck, as the latter are pretty unusual.

Based on my Bronco...you just might be able to find enough room. I haven't measured it, but it looks like there may be room.

I still think that if you want the Bronco, the practical action is to find a neck or entire bass. If you want a 32" bass, there are some out there that are ready to play. You're going to have to do surgery on any 32" neck (or the body) to put it on a Bronco body, as Fender doesn't make 32" scale basses.

there is a two inch difference in scales (30" to 32") That two inches is divided equally between neck (nut to fret 12) & second half ( 12th fret to bridge saddles ) so one inch movement of the bridge is the proper distance it needs to be moved.
A 30" neck resuires a two inch bridge movement when exchanging for a 34" scale neck etc. Take care. Bob
