I replaced the Barts in mine with SGD Neo's. Talk about a huge difference! Those SGD's are just massive sounding.
I had the same low output experience with an Audere preamp in my orange semihollow KXB-6. Swapped it out with a Bartolini NTMB and never looked back. The bass can now hang with the rest of my Brubakers, which all have very strong output.
The same is true with the combination of Bartolini 59J's and the NTMB preamp.
I played a Brute with stock electronics and was very happy! I felt like I was missing something and I ended up having Kevin put in The Bartolini NTMB 3 band and 59J's just because Bartolini is my absolute favorite in many of the basses I've owned. I really sorta wished I'd kept it stock not realizing that the sound was almost just as good stock. I certainly didn't think the $$ spent were justified after the fact considering the sound I had before the change.
ETA: I have played several Audere's and never had an output issue. It almost sounds like a wiring problem or something wrong with that particular Preamp. All the Audere's I've played have a gain adjustment screw located in the cavity where you can turn up the gain for more output too. I've screwed with it a few times and always end up with too much output so I usually end up turning it all the way back down. I've had a couple Audere's that had separate gain knobs for each pickup actually.

when I got the bass , I took the pickgaurd off and checked the wiring and also set the switch for the humbucker bridge pickup to go between series/paralel , but i really didn't look for a little adjustment pot on the preamp. it is the classic 4 band preamp, and on their website there are pics but I don't see that it is adjustable. Although i am really happy with the tone i am getting out of my rig right now with the sansamp in line it is just brutal
Just wanted to share my new strings! Got a set of GHS Progressives in from from basssstringsonline.com today and have them ready to go! If you have the stock bridge, you NEED these strings. Look at those tapers at the bridge! I couldn't even get a non-tapered .130 in the bridge before, now I've got a .135 in there

I got a 142 B on mine right now unreal.... I am also thinking about changing my audere preamp in favor of the Duncan basslines Preamp i love that pull slap contour of that model and it does have two dip switch's so I can adjust the output level of the barts .
I don't believe that there is any internal adjustments on the Audere. At least I don't remember anything like that when I did the install. I too noticed the lower output as compared to the Delano or Glockenklang that I've tried in my JJX, or the Bart in my KXB. It was never an issue as I never needed much volume for playing in church. The one thing I liked most about the Audere, besides unbelievable tone control with the 4-band, was the fact that it's designed to get the most from the preamp even at low volumes (ie; not having to max out the volume knob). As opposed to several others out there, Bart included, that need to be maxed out in order to get all the preamp has to offer. This feature gave me much more freedom for playing in church, when just small volume adjustments were needed, without altering the sound of my bass.
Good luck finding one that works better for you. And, let me know if you want to get rid of the Audere, I may want to buy it back from you.
It isn't that big of a problem for me as far as the audere goes , tomorrow i am going to try it again but this time i am going to just boost all the preamp controls to about 3/4 up, i typically just run the pre flat with the low mid boosted just slightly.

Re: pickguards - it's a pretty cheap upgrade if purchasing the bass with the upgraded pickguard, although the pickguards are still made by Kevin, as far as I know. If you purchase them separately, they are more expensive.
Also, the new electronics are much improved. If you like a bright, piano tone then you will be very pleased with these.

well personally i have been amazed on a daily basis with the versatility of the brute bass's. As I have mentioned , I recently signed with a band under the universal label. we have been practicing nightly and auditioning drummer's. The one that we had last night finally hit the mark.and everything seemed to gel. Our music demands everything from very subtle clean bass lines to down right dirty and aggressive , and the brute covers all these nicely. I am running the brute through a sansamp bass driver into a GK MB500 and a Schroeder Pl210 4 ohm cab and the sound I am getting right now is unreal. I am planning on getting a pair of schroeder PL212 cabs along with a GK MB800 and a GK MB fusion running two separate stacks . This should be good for pretty much every stage i will see. along with a pair of brutes I will be set . I can't even believe how good it feels to be part of something original .for the past few years I have done the working cover and casino gig, so doing something that is my own is really exciting .
I installed a Hipshot B style aluminum bridge on my Brute today...man what a difference! It gave me a deeper, smoother bottom end...just a more solid sound all around. No it's not like a night/day difference, but definitely noticeable, and definitely worth the price of the bridge..especially if you can get a good deal on one!
Well my next brute should be here in a week or two ordered a black JJX5 with the natural pickgaurd like the ones on the mediteranean model .. Stoked

Kevin uses the B style on some of the US basses like the JXBs but uses the A style with adjustable spacing far more often. They both work. I prefer the heavier A style bridges... none of my basses have a B style bridge. Even my JXB-6.
