I just purchased this bass on ebay: Invalid Link Removed

Does anyone else have the same model? Please tell me that I didn't waste my money. I'm not expecting perfection. Just something that with a little set up will letmefigure out if I can manage a 7-string or not.

Hard to say if it would help or hinder your interest in 7 string bass. Where luthiers are worth their weight in gold is making the basses feel much more comfortable and ergonomic. If you took your basic P bass profile and made it wide like a 7, it ain't gonna be very comfortable to play. If the top horn isn't long enough, you'll have considerable neck dive.

If you search under "Antoniotsai" you'll get a lot of information about these basses. The BruceWeiart basses are very similar to the Antoniotsai line, so basically anything said about one brand applies to the other.

With some work you can get the bass playable ..... read through the threads on the search, it'll help you a lot .... :cool:

Pointbass, Looks like you were right. My bass arrived with the same set of strings as the one Lokire bought (6-string set with two low B's).

I haven't been able to play it yet (still waiting for the real 7-string strings to come in), so I can't comment too much on how it plays or sounds. It looks like a decent enough bass for the price. The frets are very rough and need to be looked at. The inlay work isn't perfect, there are a few gouged spots on the fret board from either the inlay or fret work, the nut was poorly cut, the pockets for the pickups and electronics are a little rough around the edges and the individual bridge pieces weren't put on with 100% accuracy. It's all stuff that can be fixed with a bit of work. My biggest complaint is the neck dive. I like the shape of the headstock (more so than the ones offered by Antoniotsai) but it needs to be smaller. They could easily shorten the headstock an inch between the nut and the first tuner and cut another inch off of the very end. Making the top horn just a little longer, or turning it into a single cut would help too. It’s definitely good enough to see if I can play a 7-string or not.
I do have a question about the neck though ... it seems really wide, even for a 7-string. It measures 2.44" at the nut and 4.04" at the 24th fret. Does that sound about right compared to some of the other 7-strings out there?

It does seem a little wide, but perhaps your bass is accommodating wider string spacing than "most" seven strings out there. My seven measures 2.25" at the nut and 3.875" at the 24th fret. String spacing varies from 18mm to 17mm as it decreases from bass to treble sides.

Actually, the width seems to be just about normal. My FBB 7, which has 18mm spacing is right around 4 1/2" at the 24th. If I remember right, the Bruceweiart/Antoniotsai are 16.5-17 mm spacing, which would match up to your measurements. I'll have to measure the Conklin GT7 width, but I believe it's just about 4" ... the GT7 is also 16.5 mm spacing ....

I think the only measurement that seems a little wide is at the nut, like it's a bit too much of a grab at first position. 4" at the 24th fret seems about right, though.

Wow Ed, 4.5" at the 24th would seem really wide to me. It's a good thing you're not a small man. :hiding:

Yeah, that's one of the drawbacks of the wider string spacing, but I'm a big bastidge with big hands. I'll have to take a very accurate measurement of my 7, maybe it's a touch less than 4 1/2", but it's very close to that. I almost went with a 19mm spacing, which would have pushed the 24th fret measurement even further.

You can really see the width at this angle, the birdseye rails on the neck make it appear to be somewhat thinner next to the darker fretboard .... ;)

If you look at the pics of the Bruceweiart/Antoniotsai basses you can kinda see how wide it is at the nut, almost like there isn't that much of a taper from top to bottom ....
