Ok, so I am talking to this guy that has the same head I do,(no I am not talking to myself!). Its a Carvin R600 series III. And he says he runs a DI and splits the signal with a Y cable to two sets of effects pedals and then into the back of the head that is biamped so his filter goes to the 4x10 cab but his other effects that work better with low freqs goes to his 15. His rig is biamped.

Is this possible? Is this bypassing the pre-amp? I know my envelope filter sounds better with my tens than my 18 and is just mud with them run full range. So I don't use it much. But will the head do this? If so, what inputs would you use on the back of the head?

Looking at the manual, I think it's possible. Each of those 'Insert' jacks is a send AND return, via Tip/Ring/Sleeve trickery. I'm not sure exactly how you'd patch it(Your explanation didn't make sense to me).
But clearly there is a way to do two send/returns, from the preamp/crossover and back to the power amps.

Well, there's amp1 and amp2 inserts just like mixer inserts, used with Y cables with TRS on one end and a pair of TS at the other end. But they might be operating at levels some stomp boxes won't work well with.

Carvin manuals might not baby sit one through each and every config under the sun but I'm relatively sure they describe the features and each and every item on front and back panels. Be thankful they aren't written in Engrish rike Rorand and Ramaha used to do ; }

If I'm reading that back panel correctly, Amp1/Spkr1 is low freq, Amp2/Sprk2 is hi freq, thus, connect the split of the signal that you want to go to the 18 into the Amp1 insert and come out of the Sprk1 out to the 18. Then, connect the other in to the Amp2 insert, and connect the Sprk2 out to your 4x10.

As far as it it's bypassing the pre - I don't know, read the manual. It should say where those Amp1/2 inserts actually insert.

Edit - Good eye, I didn't notice the TRS notation on the side of the input. Or that someone had already said something about it haha.

There's no way they are before the preamp section or even the EQ sections. Even the silkscreen legend tells that story. They are just before the power amps.

Also, if one is NOT biamping but sending full-range to each power amp one would merely have different effects going into different cabs. Which would be one way to have a dray rig and a wet/distorted rig.

It seems to me that it puts them post pre-amp which actually is going around the pre-amp, or atleast taking the effects of the effect pedals off the input side of the pre-amp. Which I get, and understand that the effects will now color the pre-amp signal instead of the other way around.

But, how would you use a Y cable to connect the effects to send one type of effect to the low side and another type of effect to the high side? I understand the TRS now, but can't see how the Y cable works with this unless you send to both high and low at the same time. But if I wanted to do that I would just use the effects loop and select post on the preamp switch.

The send is post-preamp and post EQ and post-crossover/selector. It has to be this way because the crossover is last in line of everything but power amp channels.

Insert-style Y cords send from all these sections down the Tip (and grounded by Sleeve) of a TRS (Tip Ring Sleeve) connector. Then one side of the Y that corresponds to this hooks its TS connector to the effects board input (first effect on the board). The other end of the Y cord hooks its TS connector into the last effect on the pedalboard and sends the signal down the wire and into the Ring (and Sleeve ground) of the TRS connector.

One Y for each side of the amp and its corresponding pedalboard.

duh....I get it now......holy crap that hurt my head! Ok, so in the picture above you would use the ts sides to go into the input/output of the pedals and then use the insert with the trs end for the insert on the amp for the pedals you wanted to go to the low side or high side of the amp. You would need two Y cables for two banks or groups of pedals you wanted to split up.
