Budget bass overdrive

If you are happy with your current board but want some gritty stuff is go with the Behringer BDI 21 which will give you some sans amp style drive for very cheap. The the controls are the same as the sans amp which gives you a very versatile drive section. If you like dark glass but don't want to spend go demon FX. I have the b7k clone and it works great for having the dark glass type distortion tone. Most of those have a lot of versatility in how you can set the amount of gain and in what part of the EQ curve. Really useful. If you want to go a little bit more expensive over 100$ the TC spectra Drive is another cool option. It has an aux and headphone jack and if you download the app you can set different types of drive and compressor setups. It can mimic a big Muff as well as a bunch of other drivers. I have one that I use when I travel and don't want to bring my higher end stuff but want a practice setup. 1 pedal and I have EQ, compression, overdrive, headphone and aux port. Obviously if you want to get more in the weeds there's ampeg Scrambler pedals and a ton of driver pedals everywhere.

No, it does its own thing OD-wise. Been a while since I had a BDDI, though. The Sonicake really shines and much smoother at more restrained / lower OD levels, especially the top-end. Always-on for me.

When the pedal or OD section is bypassed, the response is somewhat anemic but I'm not sure if that's an inherent tone-suck or my mind playing tricks. I need to do some more experimentation. The 1/4" and XLR outputs are on the high side, the latter requiring some addt'l gain attenuation at the mixing console.

I don't use OD/Dist much so I went for the Sonicake B Factory as it also has a 3 band eq and a very good optical comp.
I was very surprised what this pedal can do.
Like I said, the optical comp is very good and the 3 band eq is very effective too.
It's the drive channel that surprised me.
If you play with the blend on the drive channel, you can get some really fat, punchy sounds.
The drive doesn't really kick in until the 3 o'clock position so it gives you plenty of room to create some really nice tones that are full, fat and in your face, before the drive kicks in....I absolutely love this aspect of the pedal.
JUST ONE EXAMPLE - I run the blend at about 11 o'clock and the drive at 9 o'clock and it produces a fat, punchy tone that really does sound awesome...especially for rock players.
With the drive and blend flat out you get a fat, dark, bubbly/fuzzy type of overdrive but you need to watch the bass on the eq or it can get quite muddy.
This pedal is its own beast and what it does, it does very well.

These were my impressions, as well. From an earlier thread: The comp is at the top-of-the-list for "one knobby jobbies"....beats the pants off my Tech 21 Bass Fly Rig.

Yes, it's very good, I absolutely agree.
If they had the comp in a simple, one dial mini-pedal, I'd definately buy it...whatever they've done, it's very functional and effective (I'm not sure sonicake realises how good it is?).

One caveat: the DI output is line-level, fairly hot, and flummoxed a venue's resident sound guy which is how I ended-up with it...for free.

I'd like to see it in an elongated fly-rig a la the Tech 21 BFR. As I understand things, their dual-mode delay / reverb (Sonic Ambience) is pretty durn respectable, too. Stick that in the mix if there's room...plus a tuner!
